Our farmhouse stone cellar walls

Our farmhouse stone cellar walls

I have two toads living in my cellar. It is an old farmhouse with an amazing stone foundation. I’m not exactly sure how they got in (rather unnerving if I think too much on that) but the toads are happy and healthy.

“Don’t put them outside, they’re eating the spiders,” my sons tell me.

I do hate spiders. I mean they have their place in nature but I don’t appreciate them in my house. So, if the spiders invade, why not toads?

The big toad is Bob. He’s the size of the palm of my hand. And I’m ashamed to say I’ve stepped on him twice by accident yet he survived. He still hops about but now I detect a certain crouching terror when he sees me coming down the stairs. The other toad is new – dubbed Boblet – the size of my thumb nail, and he very actively avoids me. But they don’t mind the cats. They seem to have a truce, although Jasper likes to bat at Boblet occasionally when he’s in one of those moods.

If this works out maybe I’ll start an all-natural spider removal business – supply specialty toads – large Bob-size types for bigger homes, apartment size Boblets for minor infestations. Natural, green products are all the rage, should be a big seller. I wonder how fast toads reproduce.

Our toad doesn’t mind attention! (please be patient, this video takes a minute to load)
